10 tips to help you settle in Cyprus

Turning a long-held dream of living abroad into reality is one of the most exciting and fulfilling challenges you will ever face. The rewards of living in a new culture are fantastic. But there are a few tips which will make the move that little bit smoother as you settle into your new life. Whatever your reasons for moving to Cyprus and whether you are doing it alone or with family, I hope some of the below tips will help.

1. Learn the lingo
English is not an official language in Cyprus but we're lucky because it is very widely spoken. However, learning some Greek is a great way to feel that little bit more at home. Cypriots will appreciate your efforts too.

2. Social media
The likes of Skype and Facebook are worth their weight in gold. Sharing the events of day-to-day life with loved ones back home is just a click of a mouse away so get set up. Also a Google search will lead you to good local forums which are a mine of information.

3. Learn about your new home
Cyprus is rich in history and culture. There are several good books available about this fascinating island. Pick one up and enjoy the adventure!

4. Explore the island
Once you've read about Cyprus, treat yourself to a few day trips around the island. You can take an organised bus tour or drive yourself. There's a whole new world out there!

5. Get involved
There are scores of British and Cypriot-run charities in need of all types of volunteers. Find one which suits your personal values, offer your services for a few hours a week and meet like-minded people.

6. Plug into social network
Whether it is a weekly dining get-together, sports association or expat social club there is so much on offer socially for newcomers. Take your pick and make new friends.

7. Follow the news
Making an effort to follow what is happening locally is another way of connecting to your new home. The last few years have seen an explosion in English-language media so you are spoiled for choice.

8. Convert your daily expenditure
The euro is the currency in Cyprus which can be a bit daunting if you are used to Sterling. Converting the amount that you spend each day into pounds will help you gradually get more confident with a new currency.

9. Cut through red tape
In all of the main towns in Cyprus there are now excellent Citizens Advice Centres. These one-stop-shops provide information in English on all sorts of official matters. The Nicosia British High Commission website is useful for details about any other tips you may need as a British ex-pat in Cyprus.

10. Don't compare
Something many people do to their peril is to compare Cyprus with the UK about every little thing. This is like comparing chalk and cheese! After all, part of settling into a new country is embracing all the differences.

I hope this helps. Until next time!
