So you think you want to own a holiday home in Southern Cyprus or live there permanently? It’s a big step, where preparation is the key to success. You’ll need to do your research and ensure your family is behind you. Careful thought will also need to be given as to whether you can cope with the inevitable changes and challenges that will arise.
Living your life-long dream should not be a rushed decision, as Margaret and Dave who are currently looking for their Cyprus home are discovering. Margaret said: “Dave and I have always wanted a little place of our own in the sun. We eagerly watch the holiday programmes on television and at last, it’s our turn!”
It all began when a holiday on the island triggered their longing to live there. They stayed with friends in Latchi and were really impressed with the peace and quiet. But their friends soon pointed out that during the winter months, the holidaymakers all went home and the place was deserted. That was a point to remember, as having neighbours around them was important.
Dave explained: “Once Margaret and I had been to the island a few times, we knew Cyprus was the place for us. After our first visit, as soon as we got home we went to the local library and took out as many books as we could to read up on the place. It was surprising how much knowledge we gained by doing this. Then, we decided to visit property exhibitions too. These were great information gathering exercises, but very tiring.”
“Margaret and I decided against going on any inspection trips. We had already visited the island a few times, so were quite happy to conduct the search for property ourselves. We wanted to take our time.”
“We have built up a huge folder containing all the information we have found. The internet was a brilliant source, particularly expat forums. We discovered all sorts of things, both good and bad.”
“Check lists were one of the most useful things we came across. These contained all sorts of questions to ask lawyers, developers and estate agents. We discovered early on that you do have to be very careful buying overseas; it’s not the same as buying in the UK. But, if you do your research thoroughly and have a really good independent lawyer, then you are as safe as you can be.”
Margaret and Dave are now armed with a huge amount of valuable information but still haven’t taken the plunge. It’s Dave’s belief that prices will still fall further.
“We’ve been watching property prices in Cyprus fall over the last 12-18 months and we are waiting to pounce on a bargain. Margaret and I have booked another trip over towards the end of the year as our research shows that the best time to buy is in the cooler months.”
Margaret said: “We are confident we will find our ideal property very soon. This is such an exciting time for both of us. Just think, this time next year, we will be living our dream!”
