Helping You Build a Life Overseas

Russia Gala

For such a small island, Cyprus is home to a huge number of different communities; for example, I recently had the pleasure of attending the 9th annual Cyprus-Russia Gala in Nicosia. Janice Ruffle, who organises the island-wide Business Woman Awards, kindly invited me to attend along with a small contingent from Paphos. This kind of event is worth dressing up for - and I must say we all washed up well in beautiful clothing from our favourite local Paphos boutiques Dominate King Fashion and Prive Studio, and finishing cosmetic and perfume touches courtesy of LR Health & Beauty. If you think Cyprus is lagging on the fashion front, think again; there is plenty available if you know where to look.

Anyway, one of the reasons for the event is to celebrate the business and cultural ties between the two countries and, as always, there was a splendid array of entertainment put on by gifted Cypriot and Russian performers. The evening commenced with a goose bump-making rendition of The Dying Swan by none other than prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova of the Bolshoi.

The event was held in support of Radiomarathon, and was presented under the High Patronage of the First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus, Mrs. Andri Anastasiades. The Cypriot charity has supported children with special needs for several decades.

The Gala was enjoyed by over 600 guests, including several VIPs, such as the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Nicos Anastasiades, the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, and the Minister of Education and Culture Professor Kadis. As in previous years, they were joined by numerous heads of Cypriot, Russian and international companies based in Cyprus.

The star-studded line-up for the Cyprus-Russia Gala 2015 included, in addition to Svetlana Zakharova, the ensemble Bayan Mix, celebrated Russian singers Alexandra Vorobieva and Anton Belyaev with the band Therr Maitz, the group Diastasis and popular Cypriot singers John Karayannis, Maria - Elena Kiriakou and Doros Demosthenous. The Gala was organised and presented by Ensemble Productions Ltd.

The Gala served to remind me of how diverse Cyprus is and what a pleasure it always is to engage with the many cultures that have made the island their home.
